ATHENS SYSTEM

Spring 2008

Pilot phase: May 2007

The Hellenic Centre of the International Theatre Institute with the collaboration and support of the Ministry of Culture and the Hellenic Culture Organization is organizing in Spring 2008 Athens System, a system of presentation of performances of the current theatrical season which will be chosen by a special committee.
Persons of international appeal, such as important international festival directors, theatre critics as well as distinguished artists will be invited to watch the performances. The project aims at leading to international collaborations and to the invitation of Greek productions to international meetings and festivals. At the same time, the Greek public will have the opportunity to watch the most interesting performances of the current season.
The special committee consists of renowned persons of the arts and literature but also of students of the Departments of Theatre Studies of Greek Universities.
This year the project will be launched on a pilot phase from 16 to 20 May 2007, so that individual possibilities of its realization and its operation will be investigated. For this reason at this stage the system will work on a limited scale.
The performances which will have the opportunity to participate will be selected among the current theatrical season’s productions and especially from the moment of the official announcement of the project (Tuesday 27 March 2007).
Each year a Symposium on a different theme will take place in the context of Athens System. This year a round table discussion will take place under the title “Modern Greek Theatre and the International Stage” with the participation of foreign and Greek guests.

Pilot phase

Objective:
Α. The publicity of the Greek Theatre abroad with the ultimate aim its presentation on international theatrical stages.
B. The reinforcement of the position of theatre in Greek society through the concentration of significant performances of the current Greek theatrical production.
C. The creation of an electronic archive of modern Greek performances, through the filming of the performances which will participate in the action.

Selection criteria:

• The performances will be selected by a special committee
• Especially for this year’s pilot phase the performances will be selected among those which will run during the period of the announcement of the action.

Committee:

• Nteni Euthimiou- Tsekoura, instructor of dance, in charge of educational programmes of the Greek National Opera, choreographer, head of the Advisory Committee of Dance of the Greek Ministry of Culture
• Ntenis Zacharopoulos, art historian, curator, and artistic director of the Macedonian Museum of Modern Art.
• Dimitris Kamarotos, musician, composer, member of the Centre of Modern Music Research.
• Giannis Leontaris, director, cinema theoretician, lecturer at the Theatre Department of Theatre, Fine Arts School, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
• Savas Patsalidis, theatre critic, professor of theatrology at the Department of English Literature, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, member of the Advisory Committee of Theatre of the Greek Ministry of Culture.
• Dimitris Tsatsoulis, theatre critic, assistant professor at the Department of Theatre Studies in Patras University, member the Advisory Committee of Theatre of the Greek Ministry of Culture.
• Students from all the Departments of Theatre and Theatre Studies: Costis Constantakis, Dimitris Babilis, Georgia Paizh, Christina Panagiotara, Marietta Spiliotopoulou

Admission requirements:
·      Performances with participation rights:

1. Performances that cease to run on Sunday 1st April
2. Performances that continue to run after Easter
3. Performances that begin to run after Easter
4. Performances from the regions

• Theatres wishing to participate must:

1. Fill in a special participation form
2. Send a DVD of their production (or, alternatively, with scenes from their production)

1. On the venue of the productions which are selected and still run
2. On venues which will cooperate especially for Athens System
